On Wednesday I attended Michael Mentler’s SOFA drawing group for the first time. He has a terrific studio and runs a very good session. The model was Aralyn. I had a good time but I didn’t draw very well for some reason so I am just posting one short pose drawing. On Sunday at the Cedars Gallery we had Dwight for a model. Again I was largely dissatisfied with my work. I spent a lot of time on a hatched pen drawing but I realize now that it was too big for that technique. Back at home I did some anatomy study from that drawing and then did a small pen sketch from memory which I am posting here. Incidentally, Steve Armes brought his Pit Bull which is trained to attack anyone who bad mouths Bouguereau so it was a quiet afternoon for me.

Inventing Light
Posted by kuehne on June 15, 2008
To continue work I did in John Lincoln’s class I did line drawings from life and then used the drawings and invented light to produce a couple of paintings. This is a skill I want to continue to develop for several reasons; it is useful in drawing and painting more strongly from life and it is of course necessary for working from the imagination.

Life Drawing Class
Posted by kuehne on June 13, 2008
In May I took a two week intensive life drawing class given by Brookhaven college. This was a 3 credit hour class run in what they call the Maymester. It was led by guest teacher John Lincoln of Los Angeles and Paris. Assisting him was Brookhaven teacher Lianne Krueger Sullivan. Mr. Lincoln was a student of Robert Beverly Hale. He is a tough old school guy who stressed understanding the form you are drawing and making up light to express that form. We had homework where we made cross contour drawings of pears and shoes and then “lighted” them from different directions. We drew all day long for two weeks with poses running from 5 to 25 minutes. I did over 70 drawings of 15 minutes or longer. It was a rare opportunity to study with a great artist. Here are some samples of my efforts.
